Lamborghini: a legend transitions from road to sea
Inspired by the Sian, this Tecnomar features the same styling cues.
“This is the logical consequence of the meeting of two brands that share values such as ‘fun to drive’ and a passion for performance”. “The idea was to deliver the emotions of the being aboard a Tecnomar craft that in addition not only offering the performance of a Lamborghini but also its comfort and driving pleasure”. This is how Mitja Borkert, head of design at Automobili Lamborghini, and architect Gian Marco Campanino, head of the Tecnomar Style Centre, introduce the new Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63. Both individuals work into very different design sectors but together have created an astonishingly leading-edge, blisteringly fast 60-knot boat that, as Borkert stresses, represents the very best of luxury sector design. The first meeting about this project, which came about more out of a shared passion for design and ‘dynamic lightness’ than a clever marketing plan, happened only at the end of last year at the Lamborghini headquarters in Sant’Agata Bolognese, followed by further discussions at the Tecnomar base in Carrara. The first steps in the process involved transferring Lamborghini’s design cues and canons to the boat world. Next came an analysis of the engineering challenges involved and materials that could be integrated into the project, and finally personalisation by the two parties. “It goes without saying that we were initially charmed by the idea of interfacing with such a completely different world, one that was so successful, prestigious and super-specific,” smiles Campanino. “But we quickly realised that certain differences aside, such as shore, sea, cars, boats, the creative flow involved in designing a car is not so different from the way we design yachts. So in the end, we developed a much deeper relationship than we first imagined we could” “To me, it was making every car designer’s dream come true: designing a yacht and moving from the problems you get with asphalt and the wind to the ones you get with the water and the wind,” explains Borkert.
“A series of challenges from a completely different world that I got to know. My main goal was always to produce a boat whose design spoke our language. Not just to create a car that could move on the water. That was made possible by the excellent synergic relationship with Tecnomar. I am confident that the Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 really is a work of art. A work of art that started out with a purely creative part but that was also based on a series of elements already developed by our naval engineers,” chips in Campanino. “We didn’t produce a series of concepts. We began about a year ago with very tight deadlines. We were full of enthusiasm and worked very quickly indeed. That didn’t mean we skimped on engineering and design R&D though. The boat is still being researched, tested and mocked-up. It is all about the detail”.
“Speaking of which,” says Borkert, “many elements were transferred from Lamborghini cars to this motoryacht. Such as Alcantara, the carbon-fibre and luxury leather trims, the steering wheel, the steering seat, the Start&Stop button for the two engines, the cockpit. But most importantly of all, the Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 features the Gandini Line that has always been the signature of our cars together with the hexagon, another recurring shape. The inspiration provideo by our Sian is underscored also by the Ys that light up the headlights”. “Tecnomar is very much a design-oriented brand,” continues Campanino, “so we have codes redesigned on a Lamborghini theme. The two brands share a strong appetite for design, for quality lines, a focus on volumes and proportions. On the tiniest detail. And enjoyment. The Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 has the same simplicity as a Lamborghini car so that it can be used confidently”. One last question for Mitja Borkert and Gian Marco Campanino: will the Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 be a once-off experience or will there be other projects to come? In reply, Mitja Borkert quotes Ferruccio Lamborghini who, on the launch of his own challenge, declared: “That was the moment I finally decided to create the perfect car”.
“We were driven by the same spirt, and right now we are concentrating on this as we wait for the first launch. The future is always there to be written and the present is giving us a lot of satisfaction that deserves to be enjoyed without any distractions”. “Whatever happens, there has been huge growth in collaboration and team work,” confirms Gian Marco Campanino. “But the challenge isn’t over yet. There is a long way to go to the launch in the first half of 2021. And who knows then if there won’t be a seafaring SUV or another supercar in the future”.
