There is a precise moment when nautical luxury changed its soundtrack. Until a few years ago, the arrival of a tender in the bay was announced by the growl of a petrol outboard; today, more and more often, the only thing you hear is the whisper of water against the hull. This is the silent luxury paradigm: an idea of exclusivity that doesn’t flaunt decibels but removes them, and one that is transforming the superyacht garage – once a mere technical stowage space – into the true laboratory of nautical electrification.
The phenomenon is no longer a boat-show curiosity. The latest exhibition seasons, from Monaco to Düsseldorf, have confirmed that electric propulsion for tenders and water toys has moved from the experimental phase to the commercial one, with a proliferation of models, industrial alliances and – a far from secondary detail – a safety and charging infrastructure that is beginning to take shape.
Why the tender, of all things
The logic is almost self-evident, on reflection. The tender is the ideal craft for electrification: it covers short distances, operates close to the mothership – which becomes its natural charging station – and lives in precisely the environments where the combustion engine is at its worst: crowded anchorages, marine protected areas and ports tightening the screws on emissions. Several Mediterranean marinas, from the French Riviera to the Balearics, are introducing restrictions or surcharges on combustion-powered craft, and an electric tender thus turns from an ecological indulgence into an operational passport.
Then there is an argument that owner’s representatives and captains know well: getting petrol off the boat. An electric tender means no flammable fuel stored aboard a diesel-powered yacht, simpler bunkering, reduced maintenance and lighter crew training. The total cost of ownership, between the absence of fuel and simplified mechanics, is starting to work in electric’s favour, even if the purchase price remains higher.
And finally there is the experience – which, in luxury, is everything. The transfer from ship to quay without vibrations, without exhaust fumes and without having to raise your voice to hold a conversation is exactly the kind of detail an owner – or a demanding charter guest – notices and remembers.
The offering gets serious
The market has responded with surprising speed. Williams Jet Tenders, the segment’s undisputed benchmark, brought the zero-emission EvoJet 70e to boot Düsseldorf, legitimising electric propulsion in the eyes of the most traditional audience. Falcon Tenders, the British superyacht custom specialist, has launched the E8, eight metres penned by design studio ThirtyC. And from the joint venture between New Zealand manufacturer ZeroJet and McConaghy – the yard behind the carbon racers of the America’s Cup – comes the MC-Zero range, unveiled at the Palm Beach International Boat Show: tenders built entirely in carbon fibre, with 30 kW electric jet propulsion and semi-solid state batteries, designed to fit standard tender garages and featuring patent-pending solutions such as a repositionable helm console enabled by fly-by-wire controls.
The strongest signal, however, comes from the major shipyards. At the end of June, Sanlorenzo announced its partnership with BYD Energy Storage to develop energy storage systems dedicated to high-end yachting – a building block of the Road to 2030 strategy, which also encompasses hydrogen tenders. When a builder of that calibre brings the world’s battery giant on board, it means the electrification of the “yacht system” – mothership, tender and toys included – has become a matter of industrial planning, not marketing.
Water toys: where silence becomes the product
If the electric tender answers an operational logic, electric water toys sell the sensation directly. The eFoil – the board with hydrofoil and electric motor that lifts the rider above the water – is now considered minimum equipment for a competitive charter: two boards on board are the standard, not the exception. Brands such as Fliteboard, Lift and Germany’s Aerofoils (founded with input from designers with an Audi background) are competing in a segment where the experience of silent flight over the water is the product itself.
The most iconic category, however, remains that of underwater , dominated by Cayago’s Seabob. And here 2026 marks a leap in positioning: the SEABOB SE63, developed with Automobili Lamborghini and presented at boot after its September 2025 launch, brings the codes of Sant’Agata’s supercars into the world of toys – the start button, the central carbon element, titanium and magnesium components – with electrically extending side wings and a record thrust rating of 162 TP. Production is scheduled for the second quarter of 2026, with availability from the summer. This is no longer an accessory: it is a collector’s object sharing its DNA with the car parked in the garage ashore.
Meanwhile, the category is hybridising and inventing new formats. Awake has christened its “Foiler” NAVI – neither a jetboard nor a traditional eFoil: a carbon composite hull lifted by a hydrofoil, ridden seated with a twist throttle, with deliveries starting in August 2026 at a list price of around €40,000. France’s SeaNXT is pushing the premium full-carbon underwater scooter, while modular inflatable platforms – the so-called floating beach clubs – are being fitted with dedicated eFoil launch ramps and docks for Seabobs and personal watercraft, turning the yacht’s stern into a temporary resort.
The other side of the coin: batteries, safety, infrastructure
It would be dishonest to tell only the glossy side of the story. A fleet of electric toys means dozens of lithium batteries to charge and store on board, and fire risk is the issue keeping captains and insurers awake at night. It is no coincidence that an entire supporting industry of certified charging and quarantine systems is emerging, from boxes tested for on-deck use to Lloyd’s Register-certified modules that interface with the ship’s alarm systems and allow the captain to monitor the temperature and state of charge of every single battery from the bridge. This is the invisible side of silent luxury: for silence to be truly relaxing, it must also be safe.
Then there are the physical limits of electric propulsion – range, charging times, battery weight – which still favour hybrid or combustion solutions for long-range service tenders. But the trajectory is clear, and the evolution of the cells themselves, from LFP to semi-solid state, is eroding the gap season after season.
A luxury measured in decibels
The upshot is that the electrification of the “minor fleet” is redefining the hierarchy of values on board. For decades, nautical luxury was measured in metres, knots and horsepower; today a growing share of it is measured in what is absent: noise, vibration, fumes, the smell of petrol. The electric tender gliding into the anchorage at sunset and the Seabob slicing through the water without disturbing swimmers or wildlife are not merely sustainable choices – they are aesthetic statements. And in a market where the new generation of owners regards sustainability as a prerequisite rather than an option, silence is destined to become the most sophisticated form of ostentation.
