Exit Carbon brings the Venetian bricola to the superyacht stern

The Venetian lagoon is full of objects nobody would call design, and which have been design for centuries. The bricole — the timber piles driven into the seabed to mark the channels and to give boats something to tie up to — belong squarely in that category: form dictated entirely by function, material chosen to survive salt water, geometry refined by a run of continuous use that Exit Carbon puts at thirteen centuries. From Camponogara, on the edge of Venice, the company has done the thing that only looks obvious once somebody has done it: taken that object, scaled it down, rewritten it in carbon fibre and carried it aboard. It is called Magnifico, and in commercial language it is a tender fender.

The weak point of the beach club

Over the past fifteen years the stern of the superyacht has changed job. Once a technical space, it has become an outdoor sitting room, a stage, and above all the main entrance: guests almost always arrive by tender rather than across the passerelle. It is also the most vulnerable area on the entire vessel. The teak of the platform, the mirror-polished topsides, the stainless detailing on the boarding ladders — everything that makes that space photogenic is also what a six-metre tender, given a little residual swell and an impatient guest, can ruin in three seconds.

The conventional answer, cylindrical fenders slung over the side, works badly on both counts. They roll, they leave marks, they shift precisely when they need to stay put, and visually they contradict everything the designer did to those surfaces. The Magnifico starts from a different premise: not a cushion hung over the side, but a vertical element planted upright, working the way a bricola works out in the lagoon. The tender comes alongside a pile, not alongside a yacht.

Vertical, removable, and no holes in the deck

The device is built around its height — 1,200 to 1,500 millimetres depending on version — with a maximum diameter of 300 millimetres at the fender section and a deck footprint of 420 millimetres. The portion reaching below the platform line ranges from 350 millimetres to a little over 600, allowing it to suit different freeboard heights: the pile has to meet the tender at the right point, or it serves no purpose at all.

The most interesting part, though, is the fitting. Exit Carbon states that the deck socket works purely in compression, without tension and without any structural modification to the deck. That choice carries two substantial practical consequences. The first is that the Magnifico goes on and comes off by hand, returning the platform to its bathing function in a fraction of the time any fixed installation would allow. The second, less visible but commercially more significant, is that the product enters the refit market without the complications of structural work: no reinforcement, no certification, no conversation with the yard that built that deck.

What makes all of this workable is the material. Weight runs from 9 kilograms in the shortest version to 14.3 in the 1,500-millimetre one: one crew member, alone, no crane and no ceremony. The same object in steel or aluminium, sized for equivalent resistance, would change character entirely — and with it the whole argument for removability.

Exposed weave, and the yacht’s name

The carbon here is not purely a structural decision, and there is no point pretending otherwise. The exposed finish, the colour customisation and the option of carrying the yacht’s name move the Magnifico out of the category of technical accessory and into that of onboard identity — the same territory already occupied by the same manufacturer’s gangways and flagstaffs. It is a field in which an object is judged with the engines off, sitting at the quay, in front of anyone walking past.

Behind it stands Exit Engineering, which claims a production cycle derived from aerospace practice: pre-preg fabrics, clean-room lay-up, curing in an autoclave at high pressure and temperature, autoclave-rated female moulds in carbon or aluminium that the company says cost between five and ten times more than the marine industry’s typical tooling, and suppliers inspected every six months. These are the manufacturer’s own statements, not independently verifiable, but they sit consistently alongside a price list that opens at €8,000 for the 1,200-millimetre version and reaches €8,500 for the 1,500.

Looking backwards to solve a new problem

What finally makes this product worth attention, more than its specification sheet does, is the shape of the thinking behind it. The problem — protecting an increasingly precious stern from an increasingly heavy tender — is very recent, born with the conversion of the beach club into inhabited space. The solution is centuries old and sits a few miles from the shed in which the Magnifico is laminated. In a sector inclined to answer every new requirement by inventing a new mechanism, somebody solved this one by looking out of the window.
