Ferrari Hypersail wears yellow and grey

Enrico Voltolini, now Project Leader, thanked Giovanni Soldini, Team Principal, who abruptly left the project (the official version is due to the completion of the phase in which he was involved), opening the presentation of the livery for Ferrari Hypersail, the 100-foot-long, 20-meter-wide foiling monohull with a 40-meter mast. The boat is aiming for all major ocean records (including the round-the-world race) and is scheduled for launch “no earlier than September,” according to the official statement.

An Innovation Platform

Representing the Maranello-based manufacturer’s Ferrari Hypersail project, announced on June 25th of last year as an open innovation platform, “in which different skills merge in a collaborative process to redefine the boundaries of possibility and achieve a synthesis of engineering and style”: Matteo Lanzavecchia and Marco Guglielmo Ribigini of the Ferrari Tech Team, Flavio Manzoni, head of the Ferrari Design Studio, French naval architect Guillaume Verdier, responsible for the project, and Australian Glenn Ashby, head of the rig (mast and sails).

An Unexpected Opportunity

“Hypersail represented an unexpected opportunity for the Ferrari Design Studio,” explained Flavio Manzoni. “A challenging objective, due to its complexity, which allowed us to extend our creative research to a different context than usual. In fact, the Design Studio is not new to this type of project. Previous experience in racing car projects, to cite a highly technologically advanced sector, has encouraged us to explore a more complex field, where we can test ourselves and expand our expertise.”

The Choice of Giallo Fly

Manzoni then explained the development of the vessel’s livery, where the Ferrari Design Studio sought to create a connection between the Hypersail’s forward-thinking design and the brand’s aesthetic history. The color response was a clear hue: Giallo Fly, a color that carries with it a precious narrative heritage and, as yellow, is historically the second soul of Ferrari. Born from an intuition by Fiamma Breschi, widow of racing driver Luigi Musso, famous for his distinctive yellow helmet, and friend (or rather, muse) of Enzo Ferrari, Giallo Fly was first adopted on a 275 GTB, the first yellow Ferrari in history, giving rise to a shade destined to become legendary. In the case of the Hypersail, Giallo Fly also finds a natural connection in the word “fly” with the specificity of this vessel.

The grey-and-yellow combination

The Hypersail’s primary material is carbon fiber: the shade of grey, in a new variant renamed Grigio Hypersail, characterizes the livery, revealing itself not only as an aesthetic choice but also as a direct expression of the material’s physical properties of lightness and performance. The contrast between Grigio Hypersail and Giallo Fly creates an aesthetic that is both uniform and functional: applied to the cabin, foils, and hull lines, the yellow recalls the stylistic features of the Prancing Horse’s most famous cars, forcefully highlighting the brand’s DNA and recalling, in its clear color distinction, the 512 BB, the first example of an “integrated” livery. From the hull to the Ferrari logo on the sail, inserted to give continuity to an unprecedented visual presence of the long F that began in recent years (the wing of the 2023/2024 F1 single-seater, the Lifestyle, the Daytona SP3 donated to the auction at Pebble Beach), up to the details inspired by La Ferrari and the lines of the F80, Hypersail defines a new paradigm between design and function in offshore sailing.

The Hypersail lighthouse installation

To coincide with the unveiling of the Ferrari Hypersail livery and during Milan Design Week, from April 22nd to 26th, the Hypersail project will be showcased, encompassing design, innovation, and performance, in an exhibition inside the Ferrari Flagship Store and through the Hypersail lighthouse installation, a sculptural installation by Ferrari Design Studio on the main terrace of HIGHLINE Milano, overlooking Piazza del Duomo.
