Interior trends: soft materials, neutral tones, bio-resins

Below deck, a quiet change of route is under way. The era of cold minimalism – mirror-finish lacquers, showroom whites, surfaces that repel touch – is giving way to interiors conceived to be touched before they are admired. Three threads that at first seem to run in parallel – soft materials, warm neutral palettes and bio-resins – in fact describe a single shift in sensibility: luxury is no longer measured by what is displayed, but by what is felt.

The return of touch

The first signal is tactile. Bouclé, chunky knits, mohair and leathers meant to age rather than stay pristine are replacing the taut, glossy finishes of recent years. Stone softens too: travertine and lightly veined marbles arrive in saloons and bathrooms in honed rather than polished finishes, a choice that dampens glare and copes better with the marine environment. The same goes for metals, where brushed steel and unlacquered brass take over from chrome, chosen precisely because they patina with time.

There is more behind soft textiles than visual comfort. Softness also works on acoustics and on perceived air quality, within that biophilic grammar – natural textures, sound-absorbing surfaces, greenery – that many studios now take for granted. It is the synthesis Terence Disdale has long captured in the phrase “beach house, not penthouse”: lived-in, informal interiors designed for owners who actually use their boats.

In this logic, regenerated materials stop being an ethical compromise and become a question of register: Rols’ Luna carpet, made from regenerated nylon recovered from discarded fishing nets yet with a hand close to silk, or upholstery fabrics drawn from ocean plastic such as Seaqual, prove that sustainable provenance no longer demands any sensory sacrifice.

The temperature of colour

The second thread is chromatic, and the best documented. The 2026 palette turns decisively towards warm, earthy neutrals – sand, clay, warm white, taupe – retiring the cool greys and clinical whites that dominated the previous decade. Pantone has named Cloud Dancer its colour of the year, a soft off-white sitting exactly on the border between warm and cool: on board it is precisely that balance that makes it work, returning light without the laboratory effect.

The way colour enters the scene is changing too. Accents – sage green, eucalyptus, deep blue, terracotta – are no longer entrusted to painted surfaces but to textiles, artwork and soft furnishings: a choice that keeps the interior flexible and lets the palette evolve over time without structural work. Completing the picture, lighting turns architectural and tuneable, with circadian LED systems that follow the day from the energising white of morning to the ambers of evening.

The material frontier: bio-resins

This is where the discussion turns technical – and where precision pays off. Two distinct families coexist under the “bio-resin” label.

The first is structural. Composites of flax fibre paired with bio-based or recyclable resins are moving from the hull to the interior. The most recent case is the collaboration between Switzerland’s Bcomp and Sunreef: the forward section, bar, barbecue and navigation station of the new 100 Sunreef Power are built in ampliTex™, flax and resin, in a pearl-grey and charcoal finish. According to Bcomp the material is not only more sustainable but stiffer than glass at equal weight, and it damps vibration – a quieter interior, not merely a greener one. Working the same ground are Germany’s Greenboats, Sicomin’s GreenPoxy resins (its InfuGreen 810 carries DNV approval) and recyclable thermoplastic resins such as Elium, which allow fibre and matrix to be separated and reused at end of life.

The second family is decorative: cast bio-epoxies, clear and UV-resistant, used for translucent panels, tops and terrazzo-like surfaces, where the resin itself becomes the aesthetic element.

One caveat, though, separates the marketing from the material. “Bio” is a spectrum, not a switch. Many of these resins still contain a share of petroleum derivatives, and the proportion of plant-based content varies widely – from 18% in some formulations to over 34–36% in the most advanced. Fully bio-based resins, moreover, rarely biodegrade in the marine environment: their real value today is recyclability and a reduced carbon footprint – flax fibre even carries a negative CO₂ balance, thanks to absorption during growth – rather than compostability. Add to this a premium the market puts in the region of 10–30%. For anyone specifying materials, the right question is not “is it bio?” but “what is the bio content, and what happens at end of life?”.

A single grammar

Read together, these three threads are not three trends but a single sensibility: warmth, tactility, material conscience. The point of convergence is wellbeing – the interior understood as a residence and as a sensory environment that restores rather than impresses. And bio-resins are the place where, for the first time, aesthetics and ethics come to coincide on the same surface: no longer a constraint to manage, but a design language in its own right.
