Interview with Tommaso Vincenzi, Ceo Sanlorenzo

Tommaso Vincenzi, CEO of Sanlorenzo, is undoubtedly one of the key figures in the company’s growth strategy. Thanks to a strategic vision developed over more than 15 years of direct experience within the organisation, Vincenzi coordinates the brand’s activities through an organisational model that focuses on operational synergies and innovation, always with an eye on the unmistakable style that characterises the products of the La Spezia-based shipyard.

His career, which began in 2008, led him to the presidency of the Yacht Business Unit, which in November 2024 saw the launch of its new flagship: SD132, a symbol of a tailor-made design approach that continues to define Sanlorenzo’s identity.

Measuring 40.7 metres in length and with a gross tonnage of 420 tonnes, the SD132 represents an important milestone for the company. It is, in fact, the largest of the shipyard’s composite pleasure boats and the largest in the historic semi-displacement line.

We had the pleasure of meeting Tommaso Vincenzi for a chat about this model, which has already sold six units destined to leave their mark. Thanks to the exterior and interior design by Zuccon International Project and its generous volumes, the SD132 stands out for the innovative configuration of its large beach area with side terraces that bring the walkable surface area to 70 square metres, in addition to the 85 square metres of the fly deck. The layout of the spaces, made even more interesting by its asymmetry, includes a 55 m² owner’s suite located in the bow area of the main deck and a large saloon on the same level, while the lower deck houses four guest cabins.

In designing the Sanlorenzo SD132, what input did you receive from the owner/shipyard and how free did you feel to create?

“Sanlorenzo’s design process is always guided by open and constant dialogue with the owner. The goal is never to impose a vision, but to build a tailor-made experience that reflects the needs and desires of those who will live on the boat. In the case of the SD132, the request was clear: to create a yacht that was innovative but faithful to the Sanlorenzo identity, capable of combining elegance, functionality and a more direct relationship with the sea. This gave rise to a design that reinterpreted asymmetry, expanding the connections between interior and exterior spaces and optimising liveability. The shipyard has always encouraged an experimental approach and a continuous search for new solutions, listening to and treasuring the requests of owners: this has allowed us to find innovative solutions, which are now the unmistakable signature of the style and proportions of the SD132 line.

Let’s talk about the asymmetry introduced with the Sanlorenzo SL102 Asymmetric in 2018. How has it evolved on the SD132?

“Asymmetry is a concept that we have carefully developed over the years. After the SL102A, we continued to evolve it, integrating it into different models. With the SD132, the theme reaches its maximum expression. Here, it is not just a question of style, but a design choice that amplifies the usability of the spaces. The main and upper decks are designed to maximise the connection with the sea, recovering volume and improving liveability. It is a sophisticated vision of asymmetry that goes beyond simple aesthetics.”

The theme of space is increasingly central today. How did you approach it here?

“Space is one of the fundamental elements in every Sanlorenzo project. On the SD132, we worked on several levels to optimise its perception and usability. The first aspect concerns the layout, which, thanks to asymmetry, allowed us to recover extra volume and improve liveability without distorting the proportions of the boat. Then there is the beach club, open on three sides, which creates a direct connection with the sea and expands the perception of space. Another key theme was the balance between full and empty spaces: the SD132 is not overloaded with decorative elements; it is a yacht that lets the environment “breathe”, allowing you to fully enjoy its dimensions and perspectives.”

All too often, the market has accustomed us to seeing yachts that are very beautiful but difficult to live on in functional terms, and vice versa. What is your view on combining form and function, and how has this been translated on board?

“The beauty of a boat cannot be purely aesthetic; it must be deeply linked to its functionality. For us at Sanlorenzo, this is a fundamental point: every yacht must be beautiful to look at, but above all to live on. In the case of the SD132, the design was entirely guided by this vision. We have created a boat with large open spaces, a fluid connection between indoor and outdoor areas, and details designed to simplify use, such as the distribution of volumes and the ergonomics of surfaces. The result is a balance between form and function that guarantees a natural and intuitive on-board experience.”
