Marina di Varazze: the Star Class opens the sailing season

Marina di Varazze: to give shape to a new dream, the Italian Naval League, Varazze section has decided to bet on the oldest sailing class in the world: the autumn of regattas in Marina di Varazze this year will in fact see the arrival of the Star Class. The Trophy calendar will be spread over five weekends between November 2022 and April 2023, plus a weekend in May 2023 dedicated to the District Championship. Here all our posts about Marina di Varazze.

Marina di Varazze and the Star Class

“The Star Class is a little big dream we have been working on for a long time,” explain Elio Spallarossa, President of the Italian Naval League, Varazze section, and Piero Ornolio, regatta coordinator. “This is a historic class in the true sense of the term, given that it was born back in 1911 and with which the town of Varazze boasts, among other things, a special bond: Cantieri Baglietto, a historic brand born in Varazze, built numerous hulls at the turn of the two wars, a bond that we will not fail to remember.

A Class of Great Champions

Some of the world’s greatest champions have passed through Star, from Paul Cayard to Torben Grael and, to cite a more than recent victory, let us remember the newly crowned World Champion, fresh from winning the Trophy in the United States: Italian Diego Negri. Generally these championships are held in lake areas, easily frequented by international sportsmen, or in other regions of Italy, further south. Bringing the Star Class to Liguria will certainly also be interesting from a tourist point of view. The new generations of sailors will have the opportunity to get to know a different class, less known to them perhaps, but one that knows how to give great emotions. The weather conditions are certainly more unpredictable than those on the lake; we are certain, in short, that fun will not be lacking.”

Marina di Varazze, the perfect location

For this first edition, some twenty boats are expected not only from Liguria and Northern Italy, but also from Switzerland and France: Marina di Varazze is an ideal location, where friends and family of the regatta participants will also be able to find amusement and entertainment, as it is well connected and convenient to reach.

“The initiative of the Italian Naval League is an important opportunity to add lymph to the winter sporting events: in western Liguria this is the best season for regattas and we are certain that, for the participants, finding a welcoming environment equipped with all services will contribute to making race weekends even more comfortable and enjoyable,” explains Marina di Varazze director Italo Bogliolo.

“The appointments of the Star Class will alternate with the regatta weekends of the XXXII Campionato Invernale del Ponente (Western Ponente Winter Championship) promoted by the Comitato dei Circoli Nautici del Ponente (Western Ponente Sailing Clubs Committee), an event that Marina di Varazze has been participating in for many years in cooperation with Varazze Club Nautico: 10 days of regattas that will take place in the waters in front of Varazze and Celle Ligure. We hope that sailing enthusiasts can really make the most of every weekend.”
