Project Thunderball. The name already says it all. But in this case, it is not related to the latest 007 film. On the contrary, this is the code name of a project that is about to write a new page in the history of CRN. Announced in September 2023, the construction of the 70-metre entered a new phase today with the arrival of the hull at the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona.
The strong point of this new superyacht are the external lines that reinterpret the explorer concept in a modern key. Developed together with the naval architecture by the Dutch studio Vripack, they highlight a superstructure profile with a decisive look and a strong expressive identity. ‘Our goal was to create a yacht that would guarantee fuel-efficient sailing and a comfortable cruising experience.
A goal we also achieved by virtue of our long experience in the sailing world,’ commented Marnix Hoekstra, co-creative director of Vripack. Yes, sailing. That’s the other distinguishing feature of the superyacht. In fact, it is a theme that recurs frequently, starting with the owner’s passion for the sport to the point that the 70-metre will be joined in its sailings by a smaller sailboat. Not only that. To sign the interior and exterior areas the owner has called in Nauta Design. This is no coincidence.
The Milanese studio has not only put its signature on several superyachts but also boasts great expertise in the sailing world where it has left its mark on numerous winning projects, including the first My Song. For the interior, a fundamental role will be played by the large glass surfaces whose main function will be not only to maintain a visual connection with the surrounding environment but also to ensure natural lighting of the individual rooms.
Among the many premieres accompanying the new 70-metre yacht’s entry onto the scene, it is worth highlighting the one that sees Nauta Design, Vripack and CRN, together with the Ferretti Group Superyachts Division Engineering team, team up for the first time around this project.
These are joined by Y.CO. The brokerage company completed the sale in August 2022, and plays a key role as shipowner’s representative and project management team for the client, continuing to support the client through the construction phase to technical verification, inspection and acceptance from project management activities, on-site supervision and coordination of external firms.
From the point of view of innovation, the new 70-metre yacht will adopt a peak shaving system that will bring greater energy efficiency and a significant reduction in fuel consumption. Project Thunderball has five decks and carries a 1,100 Gross Tonnage and will be able to accommodate 12 guests assisted by a crew of 15. The launch is scheduled for 2026.
