Size 52. In this case, however, we are not talking about clothing or fashion. What makes this size so special is the level of attention to which all the major players in the nautical industry have turned their attention. Yes, because if once the unit of measurement of reference was only linear metres, today it is volumes that hold sway. Understood precisely as spaces to be filled whose impact is felt on gross tonnage. The reason is simple. Currently, regulations are more restrictive from the 500 GT (gross tonnage) threshold, when regulations such as the SOLAS Convention impose a list of requirements for engineering, safety standards and management protocols typical of an international passenger ship. To circumvent these restrictions, ship owners, naval architects and designers have turned their attention to superyachts within the 499 GT limit in order to maximise usable space while avoiding the additional costs inherent in increased regulatory requirements. If we then relate this value, expressed in terms of gross tonnage, to the ideal length, 52 metres is the measure most in vogue. It is interesting to note precisely how on this platform many shipyards today have concentrated their energies to offer unprecedented and out-of-the-ordinary solutions.
The proof comes not only from the novelties seen at the last Monaco Yacht Show but also from the new projects presented there. And, among these, it is no coincidence that the most interesting ones come from two Italian companies such as Tankoa and Overmarine who, in turn, entrusted the task of conceiving something unique and distinctive to two yacht design signatures that are also Italian. From the pencils of Enrico Gobbi and Alberto Mancini came two projects, respectively the T520 Fenice and the Mangusta Oceano 52, which impressed above all for the unprecedented solutions, in terms of space distribution, that they bring with them. ‘After a careful market analysis we wanted to redefine the concept of the 500GT segment with features never seen before on a vessel of this type, where innovation and modularity on all decks make it possible to experience a Mega Yacht lifestyle,’ comments Stefano Arlunno, Mangusta President Americas. Tankoa, with the T520 Fenice, has directed its research work by emphasising the theme of versatility in terms of the use of spaces on board so as to enrich the on-board living experience with new content. ‘The yacht’s design emphasises large and versatile spaces, such as the generous flybridge with glass panels, which can be adapted to different uses according to the owner’s needs,’ explains Enrico Gobbi Ceo of Team For Design. ‘These include a lounge with opening doors at the stern and a vast area at the bow, enhanced by a spectacular swimming pool with a frontal view, accessible to all guests and connected to the aft lounge area.’
