Zero, the world’s first fossil-fuel-free sailing superyacht, hits the water

In an industry that has made exclusivity its raison d’être, the most radical gesture of Zero is not a technological issue. It is a cultural one: the first superyacht in history built to be transparent. All system data, software code, and design schematics for the 68.91-meter ketch just launched by Vitters will be freely accessible through Foundation Zero‘s open-source platform, available to designers, engineers, and researchers worldwide. A first of its kind for a yacht that has set countless records.

The most striking aspect is the name itself: Zero It is the first sailing yacht of its size designed to operate entirely without fossil fuels. No combustion engines, no diesel generators: in place of the traditional engine room, a dedicated technical space manages her integrated energy system, which is monitored from a fully equipped mission control room.

Seven years in the making

The technical launch, which took place in Harlingen following the transfer by barge from the shipyard in Zwartsluis, marks the culmination of seven years of development. The project began in 2019 through a collaboration between Vripack, responsible for exterior and interior design, and Dykstra Naval Architects, responsible for the hull design, sail plan, and thruster system. Construction began in 2023 following a research and development phase lasting more than 60,000 hours, starting at the Gouwerok shipyard, where the aluminum hull was built, before moving to Vitters for outfitting. In Harlingen, her Panamax-height masts by Carbo-Link were finally taken.

“Zero has been our perfect storm,” said Marnix Hoekstra, co-creative director at Vripack. “It challenged us in all the ways we like to be tested, and we will always be proud to have been part of this very special team.”

Energy from the Sea

At the heart of the project is the ability to harness wind, solar, and thermal energy to power the yacht and its amenities, with the capacity to cruise comfortably for up to two weeks using only renewable energy sources. Under sail, a 250-kilowatt hydrogeneration system converts the yacht’s motion through the water into electricity via turbine propellers; the biminis feature 100 square meters of photovoltaic thermal panels that produce both electricity and thermal energy for heating and cooling, while a wind turbine rounds out the system. The energy flows into an industrial-grade battery bank with a capacity of 5,000 kilowatt-hours, distributed by a 700-volt DC grid.

Emirates Team New Zealand also helped refine the hull: the topside curve developed with the America’s Cup team results, according to test data, in a 2.5 percent increase in speed and an 8 percent increase in electric power generation.

Classic on the outside, revolutionary on the inside

With her Palma Blue hull and decks finished in Tesumo, a sustainable alternative to teak, Zero was born from what Vripack describes as a “deliberate rejection of repetition,” while paying homage to the owner’s love of classic sailing yachts. The result is her extended double-sided overhangs, low, flowing superstructure, and lengthy spoon bow, enhanced by custom details such as matte-finished deck hardware and a hand-painted metal transom with a wood-effect finish.

The interiors, with a gross tonnage of 499 metric tons and accommodating 12 guests and 11 crew members, celebrate nature rather than concealing it: “pine skin” leather made from reclaimed bark, leather-wrapped marble with its cut lines left visible, and 70 percent hand-selected oak veneer—compared to the industry standard of 30 percent. Each guest cabin is inspired by a place dear to the owners, from Italy to French Polynesia, while the owner’s suite wraps around the mizzen mast, which is clad in a custom artwork by an American sculptor Sienna Martz.

Zero She will now embark on an extensive series of sea trials, during which her onboard systems will be tested and validated. And every piece of data gathered will, once again, be fed into the open platform: because this yacht was not built to remain a one-off, but to serve as a starting point. “We look forward to seeing SY Zero in her natural habitat,” concluded Louis Hamming, CEO of Vitters, “and showing the world what can be achieved when creative minds come together on a journey to build a yacht that demonstrates what can be done to make the world and the seas a little better.”
