Doxa pays tribute to Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt by making a version of its SUB 300T entirely dedicated to them. (All our posts on Doxa here)
Fifty years
Fifty years exactly since the publication of Clive Cussler’s book Enigma. It soon became a best-seller, and its unprecedented success confirmed Clive Cussler as an author to be reckoned with. It also introduced the book’s hero, Dirk Pitt, to the world. Over the space of fifty years Pitt’s daring adventures have captured the attention of millions of readers worldwide with a potent cocktail of thrills, suspense, plot twists and adventure.
Doxa and the exploits of Dirk Pitt
Rather like Cussler’s own life, in fact – before taking up the pen he had served for some years as mechanic and aircraft technician in the Military Air Transport Service, so it was no accident that Dirk Pitt is naval engineer and air force major, and that the sea and sky are constant settings in the novels, acting as a background to Pitt’s daring adventures.
From fiction to reality
But the opposite is also true, and fiction became reality when the NUMA (National Underwater and Marine Agency), the organisation Pitt works for in the books, eventually became a real-world entity under Cussler’s leadership. Based in Scottsdale, Arizona, Cussler’s NUMA undertook a number of missions to explore the depths and locate and recover famous wrecks.
Doxa writes a new chapter
The American writer investigated the CSS Hunley, the first submarine recorded to have been involved in a naval conflict and to be responsible for sinking an enemy warship. NUMA also discovered the wreckage of the Carpathia, the first ship to come to the aid of the survivors of the Titanic disaster. Now Doxa is writing a new chapter in the exciting story of Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt.
Doxa and the new SUB 300T version
The Swiss watch manufacturer has chosen to celebrate the American writer by dedicating a version of its SUB 300T to him. The dial is the distinctive feature of this collection – its design and graphics are inspired by a compass, and it is made entirely by hand with the aim of creating an aged effect, a look also recreated by the steel of the case and bracelet.
This rugged appearance of purposeful use reminds us of the watch’s role as a precision instrument in the many underwater explorations it has taken part in. “Cussler’s world-famous stories have been a natural showcase for Doxa watches, which are depicted as a crucial part of his hero’s equipment. In the words of the Swiss company’s CEO Jan Edöcs, “The famous Doxa diver’s watches with orange dial continue to be a constant presence for Dirk Pitt on his daring undersea adventures”.
SUB 200 C-Graph II: beyond all limits
Strong currents, near-total darkness and a maze of tunnels. Cave diving demands extensive preparation and knowledge. The time factor, too, is a crucial element, hence Doxa’s decision to develop its SUB 200 C-Graph II. This tri-compax automatic mechanical chronograph has three sub-dials to measure dive times and a unidirectional steel bezel with minute markers highlighted in white Super-Luminova™. The case measures 42 mm and the dial is available in six colour versions, all with refined sunray finish.
